Canine Cookies – DIY Doggy Treats

canine-cookiesThere are very few dogs who could resist a delicious cookie. The problem is a lot of store-bought brands come loaded with additives and strange ingredients. Plus – they are quite pricey!

The solution – make your own! It’s easier than it sounds. Apart from the ingredients, you will need very little equipment.

Here are 3 delicious, healthy and simple canine cookie recipes.

PB and B’s (or, Peanut Butter and Banana cookies)

Switch on the oven to 300°F. Take one banana and mash in a large bowl. Add 1 cup oat flour, 2/3 cup oats, 1/2 cup parsley, 3 tablespoons peanut butter and 1 egg. Stir to combine, and let it sit for 5 minutes.

Using a tablespoon of dough per cookie, roll 24 balls and place on a lined baking tray. Flatten slightly with the back of your spoon. Bake for 40- 45 minutes until firm and golden brown.

Bacon Bites

Switch on the oven to 350°F. Combine 1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour, 1/2 cup wheat germ, 1 large egg , 1/2 cup melted bacon fat, and 1/2 cup cold water in a medium bowl. Mix with your hands until it forms a dough.

Roll out on a floured surface. Roll until it is about just under 1/2-inch thick. Cut the dough into 1×4-inch bars and place on a lined baking tray. Bake for approximately 20 minutes, until lightly browned. Turn the oven off, turn the bars over, and place back in the oven until they are cool. Flipping them over helps crisp them.

The Basic

This is a very customizable recipe – try out different variations and see which your dog likes best.

Switch on the oven to 350°F. Combine 2 1/2 cups whole wheat flour (or regular flour or oat flour), 1 tsp. salt, 1 egg, 1/2 cup beef or chicken broth/stock and then your choice of ‘filling’, in a large bowl. Mix until it forms a dough. Roll out to 1/2inch thick and cut into slices. Place on a lined baking tray and cook for 30 minutes.

Store all of these in an airtight container in the fridge.
