Summer Healthy Treats for Dogs

summer-healthy-treats-for-dogsOn a hot day, there is nothing better than an icy treat – and your pup would agree! Keep them cool and happy with one of these super-simple frozen treats.

Frozen PB and Y’s (or, Peanut Butter and Yoghurt)

Melt one cup of peanut butter in a microwave-safe bowl, then combine with 32 ounces of plain yogurt. Pour the mixture into cupcake liners or an ice tray and place in the freezer. You can also add 3 mashed bananas to the mix.

Tuna Pops

Combine 1 5-oz can of tuna in water with 2 cups of plain yogurt and 1 tablespoon of parsley (dried or fresh) in a bowl. Spoon the mixture into an ice tray or cupcake liners and freeze.

Icy Broth Treats

The simplest version of this treat is to mix equal parts of low/no sodium broth (without onion) with water, pour into an ice tray or cupcake liners and freeze.

To add some variety, you can add something different each time. Some great fillings are:

  • Small pieces of cooked chicken or beef.
  • Small pieces of veggies such as green beans, carrots, broccoli.
  • Dry dog food

Cheeseburger

Combine cooked plain ground beef and shredded cheese, then spoon into an ice tray or cupcake liners. Top up with water or broth, and freeze.

Cocobutters

Mix 1/4 cup peanut butter, 1/2 cup applesauce, 1/4 cup coconut milk, 1 tablespoon honey, and a splash of vanilla extract in a blender. Pour the mixture into cupcake liners or an ice tray and place in the freezer.

Berry Blasts

Combine 1/2 cup blueberries and 1 cup chopped strawberries with 1 cup of plain yogurt. Pour the mixture into cupcake liners or an ice tray, and freeze.

Cococurrants

Freeze 6 oz pureed blackcurrants in an ice tray, then top with 1 cup coconut milk. Put back in the freezer until frozen.

Remember to feed these to your dog outside as they will be messy and keep an eye on him (or her) to make sure they don’t try to swallow the treat whole and choke.
